There was concern in Formula 1 this week following strong rumours that next year’s Singapore Grand Prix may be able to be take place.
‘This could be a major embarrassment for the FIA,’ said one paddock insider. ‘The Singapore Grand Prix has been the subject of a lot of talk, mostly involving people saying “Jesus, wasn’t last Sunday’s race a bit boring.” If it suddenly turned out that the 2011 race could take place, it really would be a disaster.’
However, spies inside the FIA’s Paris headquarters say that Formula 1 fans should not lose heart and that it is not a foregone conclusion that the race will not be cancelled.
‘I would like to reassure anyone who has bought a ticket for the Singapore 2011 that they should not retrieve it from the dustbin,’ said FIA spokesman, Jean-Marc Jeanmarc. ‘It is early days and we are very hopeful that the race still might be not go ahead as planned. You never know, there might be a sudden shortage of light bulbs or something.’
